Vaccine passports to potentially be introduced for clubs and festivals to return

The UK government is looking into the implementation of ‘vaccine passports’ to aid the re-opening of nightclubs and major outdoor events.

Early this week, Boris Johnson announced his roadmap to easing the UK out of lockdown, with the goal of all social restrictions to be lifted come June 21st, meaning we could see the return of nightclubs and festivals as early as this summer – if we see a decline in cases and deaths that is..

The government has previously denied a policy of a ‘vaccine passport’ would come into place. The PM stated in the house of commons that a review will consider the potential role of a Covid status certification. 

A recent government update states “Over the spring the Government will run a scientific Events Research Programme. This will include a series of pilots using enhanced testing approaches and other measures to run events with larger crowd sizes and reduced social distancing to evaluate the outcomes. The pilots will start in April.

“The Government will bring the findings from across different sectors and different settings to determine a consistent approach to lifting restrictions on these events. Depending on the outcome of this work, the Government hopes to be able to lift restrictions on these events and sectors as part of Step 4.”
